Last week was a very hard week for some special people visiting Trujillo. An eager group from Trinity Presbyterian Church in Jackson, MS, headed down to Trujillo to help us with some ongoing construction projects. However, because of this unusual winter we are experiencing in Trujillo (quite chilly with lots of fog), their flight from Lima to Trujillo was delayed so many times that they finally had to load a bus for the 8-9 hour trip up the coast. Once they arrived, they set to work immediately, and accomplished more than we imagined they would in a short time. This accomplishment was a gift from the Lord, because, after only a day and a half of work, the entire team got very sick (in-the-bed-kind-of-sick) and missed the rest of their activities in Trujillo. Then, as they weakly sat and awaited their flight back to Lima to go home to their own beds, they heard the dreaded announcemnet again - their flight had been cancelled and they had only 12 hours to get to Lima and catch their USA bound flight. So, Bill got on the cell phone and sent messengers all over to Trujillo to find a bus that could be chartered at the last minute. We gathered all the Trinity folks, plus our friends the Berrys who were visiting us and a girl from Georgia who happened to be on their flight as well, ran by the house to pick up some semblance of lunch, and headed to the parking lot of the last gas station on the road heading out to Lima. We waited for a while, sitting in the parking lot with lots of luggage - seems the driver of the bus parked in front of ours was drunk somewhere, since it was Father's Day, and had to be roused from a stupor before he would move the bus and let ours go. Once we got on, the bus driver made it to Lima in record time - 7 1/2 hours, when it usually takes us close to 9 hours - and that with a bathroom stop, since there was no bathroom on the bus. And, except for the brief delay at the entrance of the airport when the driver got the bus caught on the metal gate and couldn't move an inch until the fender was ripped off, we made it without a hitch! We at Peru Mission can not remember a team that had so many things go wrong, but we also can't remember a team who wrote a more humble, God-glorifying report to their congregation upon their return.
