Bill taught for 5 hours on the life and teaching of John Calvin and 15 hours on Biblical interpretation to about 18 eager students. Alonzo taught another 10 hours on an Introduction to the Old Testament. The students persevered well through a full schedule in the morning, afternoon and evening and indicated they learned a lot. Everyone was greatly encouraged and enjoyed good Christian fellowship together. We look forward to developing our relationships more and continuing to provide them with our module classes to complete our 3 year curriculum. We will provide these classes on-site twice a year, and provide the rest of the classes through distance learning.
In 1906, evangelical missionaries met in Canada to divide up the mission work in South America. The Free Church of Scotland was given the north of Peru, which included this Amazonas area. So, by 1956, they were making trips on horseback into the Amazonas area. By the mid-80s, they were able to plant about 8 churches in the Amazonas department alone. The evidence of discipleship and theological training is clearly seen, but over the past 15 years, they have not been attended very well by missionaries or the leadership of the indigenous Presbyterian denomination. Two years ago they asked the Cajamarca presbytery of the IEPP to enter into a fraternal relationship with them, in order to help train them through the SBR seminary - to train pastors and leaders. Alonzo, who has two brothers living in the region, has already travelled a couple of times to minister in the church. This time, Bill had the privilege of travelling with him to teach.
They were also able to do some sight-seeing one day - visiting the fascinating ruins of Kuelap, an advanced civilization high in the mountains many years before Christ.
